The aqidah that is followed largely in South-Asia and as a consequence in other parts of the World is Maturidi. Although the poles are known to be following something different such as Ashari.
Islamica Magazine once mentioned that the difference b/w Maturidi and Ashari is of 6 Points. Now, the general notion that divides Muslims in and out, is basically of the Aqidah. Personally I believe, the posts that were given to let's say Saudi Arabia of the Salafee Sect was because they were the most Prone & Capable to take care of The Most Holiest Place in Islam.
I wouldn't comment on the Shafii's and Humblee's because, it seems that the knowers of Truth and Ma'arifah. Pray like commoners in public and like The Maliki's in their rooms.
Besides, Sufism.. we know to be known to had the Hindu's like Kabir who was a Prominent Muslim went for reforms in India. His Sons name was Kamal and daughter Kamaliyah. And this Hindu Sect. still bury the bodies. And we have plenty of examples of Muslim Sufis hiding near Rivers and inside Temples as Pundits (may be because they once were or something) teaching on the way of Islamic Lines.
